These tiny little creatures
They build machines that build machines that build a structure
No love no law no teachers
No semiosis, just mitosis and aggression
Cut open their heads and then remove
The jelly inside so we can prove
If we wire them up to a big machine
Will it make one of us behind a screen
Like passing ships at light speed
Cooperating in a kind of isolation
These creatures are a puzzle
They fit together in haphazard tessellation
A primitive brain has simple thoughts
If they're even thinking, we can't be sure
If we put them together could they be more
Than primordial life-forms on the floor?
Look how tenderly it grooms its baby
Maybe they are like us
Watch in horror as they eat their offspring
They should all be crushed
