Driving in the rain
Windshield wipers wipe away
The colors fade to gray
Another year astray
Kept a diary of poetry
That I should throw away
The long goodbye
At the door
Been waiting for an invitation
For a while
The long goodbye
It seems like I've been waving to you
From afar
For quite awhile
Another picture day
I left the frame
I walked away
What if we'd stayed the same?
I never could explain
I caught a wave
My own parade
The only way to go
So willfully
Without sympathy
I could only blame myself
Absentmindedly
Watch the blueprint bleed
I couldn't tell if you were proud
And thankfully
We can sing harmony
Maybe imagine what it's like
Age gracefully
With complacency
I just rehearse the same old lines
The long goodbye
A picture of ambition
Don't you wish
That we could slow it down?
The long goodbye
Tried to hold me
Tried to mold me
Into what you know
The long goodbye
A memory
For you to keep
Until you let me go
