Violet Musical Lyrics

Water in the Well
by Violet

YOUNG VI:
Mama, why's a man have eyes?
If I tell you , don't you tell -
So he can try you on for size
There's honey in the bushes, Lord
And water in the well

VIOLET:
A battered nose, a pimpled chin,
Uneven eyes to take it in

YOUNG VI:
Mama, why's a man have hands?
If I tell you, don't you tell -
Go ask your beau, he understands
There's honey in the bushes, Lord
And water in the well

VIOLET:
I have to start the Preacher on the scar
That cuts a rainbow clear across my cheek

YOUNG VI:
There's honey in the bushes, Lord,
And water in the well-

LEROY:
Roscoe! Leroy's got a hambone with your name on it! You going someplace, Violet?

Surprised
by Violet

Violet:
Is this a suitcase - is it mine
Am I waitin' by the candy stand,
Beneath the Greyhound Station sign?
Have I got a ticket in my hand?
Stupid.
The people of Spruce Pine are stupid.

Lord, I'll call the whole trip off
If Leroy Evans looks me in the face
Nope, I win, he's terrorized
This town is a superstitious place -
Next week, wont they be surprised

Bus Driver:
Get your tickets ready.
This is Memphis bus, by way of Johnson City, Kingsport,
Knoxville, Nashville, and a bunch's towns
No bigger'n this one. Tickets, please.

Old Lady:
The Baltimore Catechism. A Catholic, in these parts?

Violet:
No ma'am.

Bus Driver:
Move along, m...oooh. Miss

Violet:
"Mr. Wallace Weatherman"
Give my scar another look
In a week you'll be surprised -
Got my healin' planned out in my book
Next week, I'll come back disguised

He thinks well of himself, I can tell that
But what does he have, really?

Lips? This. Cheeks? Flat.
I sure don't want mine like that.
Nose? Bent. Ears? Runts.
Got four eyes and he can't see once.
Nothing in his face for me
His hair though - is it Cherokee?
It's black enough to be

I want my own as soft as a breeze -
And also curlier, please

Old Lady:
Do you mind if I sit here, dear?
I like to be up front, so's I can look out the front winders.
Otherwise I get dizzy, looking off to the side...

Violet:
Once I bet her eyes were green
Wonder how those eyes would look on me
Funny, if she recognized
Finders keepers, lady, wait and see
Next week, won't you be surprised

Praise God, it is started. September 4th, 1964.

Mama, your book says "It's blessed to pity"
Mama, just look, I'm a long ways from pretty.
Be an angel, Mama, help to save me
Make the Lord restore the face you gave me -
And I will praise his grace,
Rain or shine
When you see a brand-new face
When you see a brand-new face
When you see a brand-new face -
And it's mine -
Won't you be surprised
Won't you be surprised
Won't you be surprised
Won't you be -

Old Lady:
You going far?

Violet:
Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Old Lady:
I never been there. I hear the trees give out. Oh! My goodness.

Violet:
That's just why I'm going. Get this scar healed once and for all.

Old Lady:
'Course my mailman Vincent Finzer was
Born with a cleft palate, and he couldn't be any sweater!

Violet:
I wasn't born with this scar.
It took an axe blade to split my face in two.Violet the Musical Surprised lyrics

On My Way
by Violet

Old Lady:
Well I'm going to Nashville. The country-
music capital of the world?
My son lives there and works in the cellophane plant.
He's got three little boys not old enough to be in school yet.
I don't know how I feel about a house full of children.

Violet:
It's hot in here...

Old Lady:
I had eight children myself.
Stevie, the youngest, I lost him to Korea.
Harvey's the only other boy.
The girls, of course, are scattered to the winds,
they made such beautiful brides... Sorry dear.

Violet:
I hope you have a nice visit.

Old Lady:
It's not a visit. I maybe will move. I tell
you what though, and I know you won't think well of me for it,
but I am right tired of children.

Violet:
Look at her skin -

China white,
Tissue- thin
Look how the light
Cuts clear to the bone
Givers her skin such a tone -
I'd take it any day
Praise God for everyone I meet
While I, I am on my way

My face is mean
Eighty years'
Worth of tears
Might scrub it clean
As hers, and as strong

Old Lady:
Eighty years'
Worth of tears
Might scrub it clean
...And strong

Violet:
But Jesus, don't wait so long
To make my face okay

All:
At last, the North Carolina border!
And I...

Violet:
I am on my way

Before another sunrise wakes me

Violet/Old Lady/Bus Driver:
Before another night is gone

All:
I'll find out where this highway takes me
You know I got to travel on

Left my troubles all behind me
Back there when I climbed on board
Jordon River's where you'll find me
It's wide but not too wide to ford

Violet:
And as I'm goin' along
I carry with me
Promises that can't go wrong

Young Vi:
And as I'm goin' along
Promises that can't go wrong

Violet:
As I travel on my way

Bus Driver:
First thing I'll do
Go to Sal's Barbecue
Greasy, messy barbecue
Best I've had

Old Lady:
Ready or not,
All those boys,
Making noise
Grubby hands
Dirty toys

Flick:
Can't be so bad
Not the worst
Post I've had
Not so bad

Violet:
Red hair's a thought
Really fine -
Not like mine -

All:
No matter what

Bus Driver:
I'll have some pie

Old Lady:
No better than squirrels

Flick:
It's bound to be dry

Violet:
A head full of curls

Violet/Young Violet:
Like Judy Holliday

Bus Driver:
Wave goodbye, folks, to Carolina!

Old Lady:
His wife thinks I'm a dragonfly, Lord
You've got to help me find my way

Flick:
Too bad we don't see eye-to-eye, Lord
We could pass the time of day

Old Lady/Flick/Violet:
Promises that can't go wrong

Violet/Young Vi:
As I travel on
As I travel on my way

All:
Left my troubles all behind me
Back there when I climbed on board
Jordan River's where you'll find me
It's wide but not too wide to ford

And as I'm goin' along
I carry with me

Violet:
Promises that can't go wrong
As I travel on

All:
As I travel on...
My way

All To Pieces
by Violet

VIOLET:
I want a pair of Jean Tierney eyes
Try Monte's mouth on for size
A little fuller, though
A mouth so soft there's no end of romance

MONTY:
What's a mouth got to do with romance?

FLICK:
You gotta ask, you'll never know

MONTY:
I've been with more than you, my friend

FLICK:
But none of yours want seconds, though.
Mine all come back for more

VIOLET:
Boys, boys, boys
When I'm in line for my miracle
And the preacher is all set to go
I know just what I'll ask for
But I'm not telling you at least 'til you stop squabblin' and pretend you're actually listenin'

MONTY:
Pretty please, Violet, with sugar on top?

VIOLET:
If I had Gypsy hair
And a face to match it
No traces anywhere
Of a wayward hatchet
I could be Citrise
Shootin' on location
In some far off and tiny nation

Oh, with lips like those
I'd look almost shameless
Oh, and add the nose
Now I'm pure and blameless
If Citrise is in it
That's how it goes

I'd love her all
I'd love her all
I'd love her all to pieces

I'd love her all
I'd love her all
I'd love her all to pieces

If I looked in the know
With a hint of mystery
Like a Bargitte Bardeaux
With a darker histry
If I threw you a glance
And I let it linger
I could wrap you around my finger

Oh, what a Bardeaux
Why should she be stingy?
Oh, throw in her toes
Mine are just too dingy
I'd give the preacher my mountain for those

I'd love her all
I'd love her all
I'd love her all to pieces

I'd love her all
I'd love her all
I'd love her all to pieces

I could be a leading lady
Present tense and background shady
Take an hour or two to go from
Down at heel to tippytoe from
No big deal
To the star of a picture show

MONTY:
You should ask that preacher for some Ursula Andress legs

VIOLET:
No, I think my legs are fine

MONTY:
No, but rising outta the ocean in that whith Dr. No bikini

VIOLET:
What's a matter wit my legs

MONTY:
Well, nothing. They're long

VIOLET:
Well why did you bring them up at all?

FLICK:
What you need is some Ursula Andress... there.

VIOLET:
I can't believe you just said that!

FLICK:
Not that it matters to me, but you said a leading lady is what you wanna be

How else you gonna go
light up a picture show

VIOLET:
Gimme just a minute though
To pillage my portfolio
Borrow Elke summer's hair
With Judy Garland's pretty chin
With Grace Kelly's little nose
With Rita Hayworth's skin
But Ava Gardner for the eyebrows
Bergman cheekbones under Gypsy eyes

I could shine like a moonbeam
On the silk of a ballgown
I could be someone lovely
Turning heads on her first night
In town
In town

All I need is someone to wonder, how is he?
To ask how to meet me
To love me all to pieces

Let It Sing
by Violet

Raise your foot now that's the way
You'll be movin' on today
Raise the other put it down
Now you're headed into town
Oh boy you got left, right
oh boy, ain't that right

Got some years ahead to go
You'll go free if you take it slow
Oh boy you got left, right
oh boy, ain't that right

Two kinds of people in this world
Some say yes and some say no
Time to say which side you're on
Eeeny meeny miney moe
Say yes and your adventure start
Not always as expected
Say no you stay apart
But you stay protected

You've got to give your self a reason to rejoice
Cause the music you make counts for everything
Now every living soul has got a voice
You've got to give it room
And let it sing

My family never had too much
Made the best of every day
Ate what's on our plates you know
Never threw a thing away
We left our nightmares on the shelf
Our dreams were on the table
Pass 'em down and help your self
As long as you are able

My momma told me
Son forget what might have been
Give yourself a break whatever's happening
Don't let your spirit, son, come closing in
You gotta give it room and let it, let it sing
You gotta give it room and let it sing
Oh you gotta lift up your voice and sing

Got some years ahead to go
You'll go free if you take it slow
Got some years it won't be long
You'll be free to sing your song

Oh boy you got left, right
Oh boy

Those precious little (can't understand the rest of this line)
You can make your music from the simplest things
And though no one has got to tend your soul
You've got to give it room and let it
Let it sing, oh
You've got to give it room and let it
Sing

You've got to let it sing, oh
You got to let it sing
You got to give it room
And let it sing

Who'll Be The One (If Not Me)
by Violet

Loneliness is not my friend
I try to cope with another day
I drink my pain away
Seems to be the only way
I drown my sorrow
Can't see no tomorrow
And I miss you

Oh times have changed
Only memories remain
How much do you have to pay
For love to stay away
Misery takes its toll
How I wish it wasn't so
But I miss you

The cold grows tonight
And I've forgotten how to smile
Is this it, my happy ending?

I'll always be alone

Lay Down Your Head
by Violet

Lay down your head
And sleep, sleep
I'll be your pillow
Soft and deep
Leave me your troubles
I will keep
Your days gone by
Your days gone by

Lay down your head
And dream, dream
You're so much gentler
Than you seem
Is there a chance
You might redeem
My days gone by
My days gone by

And oh
His breath is so warm
Mine is short
And my ears are ringing
Everywhere my skin is singing

Lay down your head
And sleep, sleep
I will be pleased your soul to keep
Give yourself over to the deep
Of days gone by
Of days gone by

Anyone Would Do
by Violet

I'm not in love without you, no
Don't know how to breathe, still learning how
I find it in the air too, screaming loud
Cause I know there's only one way out
So what if I'm better on my own?
And what if I told you that I'm done
You wouldn't believe it if I run
You better believe it cause I'm gone

I'm packing up and leaving don't even need a reason
The bruises from you are enough
I'm picking up the pieces, I'll let you keep your secrets
But I'm seeking back all my love
What would I do if I could rise above
And win against it all
What would I do if I was strong enough
To break down every wall
What would you do
What would you do
What would you do
What would you do

You were everything I thought I needed
Lost myself, I swear you were the reason
So I'm leaving
Cause you're poisonous
Don't you know this?
It's on purpose when you're sleeping in
It's so pointless to ignore it
Cause you're killing me
So I'm ghosted

I'm packing up and leaving don't even need a reason The bruises from you are enough
I'm picking up the pieces I'll let you keep your secrets
But I'm seeking back all my love
What would I do if I could rise above
And win against it all? What would I do if I was strong enough to break down every wall?
What would you do
What would you do
What would you do
What would you do
What would you do if I left this behind
If love's so radical
What would you do if I was doing alright
Cause I didn't need you at all
What would you do
What would you do
What would you do

Hard To Say Goodbye
by Violet

Flick: Don't worry, Don't sweat it
Go do something wrong then move along, cause it won't weigh on your mind.
If you don't let it, it isn't hard to say
I'm so sorry, I meant better
Hell its nothing new, you put me through, take the time out to (juice wine?)
In your first letter, it isn't hard to say goodbye.

Monty's not the point, isn't now, never was
But you can't ever get enough of a thing you don't need
What your mind doesn't need your heart does.

Don't worry, don't sweat it
Don't know what he said climbing in your bed, but it took him all the way
But you don't get it, cause anyone can say
I'm so lonely, I want someone
Damn it he's the kind, you always find
Doing something to catch someone's eye
Who's the real dumb one, it isn't hard to say goodbye.

(At the same time)
Violet: You know what really bothers you, Monty had the nerve to do what you were only dreaming of.
Monty's just a boyfriend
I know that, but I don't regret it.
I did something fine I'll remember forever.

Flick: Monty's not the point, isn't now never was.
But you can't ever find your way.
If your heart doesn't lead, you don't know what you need.
Your heart does.
(End)

Violet:
Two kinds of people in this world, some say yes and some say no.
I'm only learning to say yes, I'm bound to make mistakes.
But I'm bound to try, I know you think I'm no great (shakes?)
But there's more to me that meets the eye
Goodbye
If I were smart, I'd go back home but I don't give a damn.
And I'll tell you why.
I'm miles and miles from who I am, for once I'm not afraid or shy.
Goodbye.
I'm gonna miss you Flick, a lot,
I wish you felt the same as I
Goodbye.

Raise Me Up
by Violet

Can't you see what I'm trying to do?
(This is me breaking up with you)
I'm young and I wanna try someone new
(This is me breaking up with you)

Not getting married
Not having kids
Why should we go on longer than this?
I'm sorry baby, it's time to go
If I'll ever settle down, I just don't know
If I'll ever settle down, I just don't know

Can't you see what I'm trying to do?
(This is me breaking up with you)
You're really sweet and I don't wanna be rude
(This is me breaking up with you)

Dinner and movies, I've had enough
I want adventure, I need the rush
So many faces out on the road
If I'll ever settle down, I just don't know
If I'll ever settle down, I just don't know

Not getting married
Not having kids
Why should we go on longer than this?
I'm sorry baby, it's time to go
If I'll ever settle down, I just don't know
If I'll ever settle down, I just don't know

Can't you see what I'm trying to do?
(This is me breaking up with you)
Please don't cry 'cause I'm not in the mood
(This is me breaking up with you)

You'll find a girl, she'll be just right
I promise babe, you'll be just fine
My phone is dying, I gotta go
Will I ever settle down, I just don't know
Will I ever settle down, I just don't know

Look At Me
by Violet

Violet (Sung):
Look at me
No one will look at me
No one will dare to spend the time it takes to
Look at me
To really look at me
What did I do to make you angry at me?

My God
This is so hard

Look at me
Look at me
Can you imagine what it's like when people
Look at me
Look at me
Is this the tender mercy that you're known for?

My God
Don't be so hard

Give me the wings of an angel
Don't pull back
Don't shudder
Look elsewhere
Lose interest
I'm almost there

This is where the preacher stands
Two kinds of people in this world
All I have are promises
To raise me up and set me free

I'd like a pair of Gene Tierney eyes
And Ava Gardner's eyebrows
And anybody's cheekbones
A different mouth
Beneath the new
And better nose
And please, the eyes

But God, give me something!
Something of my own
Something mine
So I won't be ashamed when I find a man

To look at me
Why won't you look at me
It was an accident,
Or was it really?

Young Violet (Spoken):
Look at me!

Violet (Sung):
Goddammit, look at me

Violet and Young Violet:
This is your handiwork
The gift you gave me

Father (Spoken):
So what? Once I look at you then what?
Here I am lookin' at you, satisfied?

Young Violet:
You act like it's my fault.

Sung: Spoken at the same time:
Violet: Father:
Don't pull back I'm not the one who up and decides one day the woodshed
Don't shudder is the place to play
look elsewhere
lose interest Young Violet:
Act distant I'm not the one who doesn't check to see if his blade is loose!
Embarrassed
You better Father:
Be careful It wasn't loose, damn you. The shim came out. Nobody checks
Cause I won't the shim every time he uses his axe
Accept this
Not this time Young Violet:
I'm almost there I bet you check it now

Violet(Spoken):
God, I just want you to apologize

Bring Me To Light
by Violet

I left to find you out there
Beneath the abandoned skies
To bring you all I had, love
I loved you in that night

And the light came down on me
The light came down on me

I know my sea was changing
By the color of your eyes
I tore myself to pieces
Beneath the rising tide

And the light poured down on me
The light poured down on me

I was sure I needed your love
But in a moment I was gone
I tore myself to pieces
To find just what went wrong

And the light poured down on me
The light poured down on me
The light poured down on me
The light poured down on me

In this forsaken life
Your light poured down on me
Your light poured down on me
