I'm in the Rotunda
A rotund, much older man
I'm thinking about when I was at NC State
A time when I was invincible
Or so I thought because back then
I had a carefree and optimistic outlook
I didn't doubt myself, just did what I wanted
No matter if it seemed wild or unusual
I'm here, today it's bright, sunny, brilliant
Radiant with edges of shade
Columns of walkways covered
With students on their leisurely parade
I wish that I were younger
I wish I were more fit
I might attract a beautiful young woman
If I had more confidence
But I'm writing, and I'm writing
The jets fly by overhead
A young man on his cell phone
Defensive in conversation
Or perhaps clarification
Who knows what his party declares
I am standing still on my cell phone
I'm looking down, down on the years
In front of me, the grass, the dorms
The quad, the bluest sky
The vivid memories of why I went to college
Or what I loved
At the University of Virginia
Edgar Allan Poe
Roamed the same fields and inhaled the same wind
Maybe not, but it was the Virginia air
He took many other breaths
Many lifetimes ago
Edgar Allan Poe
There are no ravens here
Just a recollection
Of a young Alex Koman
