When you were great
When you were young
Morals and ideals
Were easy to come by
In your small town
There was no crime
The heroes were heroes
The villains did the time
They did it better
In simpler times
Less progressed minds
Boundaries and lines
Stayed in their lane
No thoughts came to wander
Equality existed
As far as you were concerned
But maybe
Your bubble wrapped ideas
Diluted memories
Aren't what they seem
Cause the world is much bigger
Your perception is relative
To your own American dream
When you were great
Times tend to change
Still things stay the same
But how you interpret
Changes with age
The world gets much bigger
The older you grow
Your point of view differs
But you won't break the mold
The ideas you were sold
In your youth you still hold
As precious as gold
They're stagnant and old
But still you defend
Your personal beliefs
As if your experience
Is the only history
And when life it gets harder
And truths come to light
You take it as a sign
Of the end of yours times
But the truth is your seeing for the very first
Time
The world as it's always been, even when
When you were great.
