Turtles are found all over the worlds oceans
With their bodies that are highly streamlined.
They have webbed feet or flippers
Which allow them to
Move through water easily
They're adapted to the aquatic life
Most turtles are able
To retract their head and feet
Into their shells, though sea
Turtles have lost this ability
They're placed in two suborders
On how their heads retract
Pleurodires pull in sideways
Cryptodires draw their heads straight back
Turtles rely on water to swim or soak
Some need to bask on dry land in warm sun
Sea turtles will rarely leave
The ocean, except
When they lay eggs in the sand
No species is known to nurture their young
Hatchlings have an egg tooth on their beak
Which will disappear shortly
After they break out of their shell
Many baby turtles are carnivores
But as they grow they learn to eat more
Plants, and beetles if they dwell
On land
Leatherbacks are known as
The only sea turtle
Without a hard, bony shell
Instead it's rubbery and flexible
They're also the largest
Turtle weighing over
2,000 pounds and can
Grow to lengths beyond two meters
Shells are often confused
As exoskeletons
They're a modified rib cage
That's part of the vertebral column
To create a complete
Protective skeletal frame
The lower shell, a plastron
Usually joins with the carapace
