Bent Roads Tavern - Carnivores at the Supermarket Lyrics

Bent Roads Tavern - Carnivores at the Supermarket Lyrics

Old McDonald had a farm but that was long ago
And the farm he has today
Well it's a little different than the one we used to know
Well the good ole' farm where the animals are free
Has been replaced by a factory
And it's so outrageous that they're locked up in cages
For the rest of their life that's where they'll be

Now in the picture books when we grew up
We learned all about the farm
And all the happy animals that lived here
And the farmer who could do them no harm
He was the jolliest guy you ever did see
And the animals loved him well
He was their friend, but that was back then
Before he turned his back on them

If Old McDonald ever loved his animals
It was long ago indeed
'Cause now the only thing that matters is production speed
Ain't it funny how a man can change
When love's replaced by greed?
Why are these animals the target
For the Carnivores who hunt at the supermarket?

And now the factory ain't all it's hyped up to be
And it sure ain't nothin like the farm
They live in tiny little cages that supposedly replaces
The good ole' homely barn
Now they live in constant darkness and constant fear
And they've been moved to a new type of diet
That's laced with sulfa-drugs
Hormones and arsenicals and nitrofurates and antibiotics

It takes fifty pounds of grain just to make one pound of meat
And every day there are people just dying in the street
Over sixty million die each year
'Cause they don't have enough to eat
Why, are these people the target
For the carnivores who hunt at the supermarket?

Now a "cluck, cluck" here and a "cluck, cluck" there
Is how we were told a chicken speaks
But a "cluck, cluck" here and a "cluck, cluck" there
Is kinda hard to say without a beak
You see the chicken they start pecking at each other
Once they've finally gone insane
Then their beaks are chopped off
Before they cost him more profit loss
Of what will still remain

Over fifty percent of current rainforest destruction
Is directly linked to livestock production
At the current rate by year two thousand and ten
The rainforest will be gone, no
Why is the environment the target
For the carnivores who hunt at the supermarket?

Oh yes, Old McDonald had a farm but that was long ago, uh oh
And the farm he has today
Well it's a little different than the one we used to know
But hopefully you'll the message within these words that I write
I might be iconoclastic and I know I'm sarcastic
But something here just ain't right

This ain't no propaganda bullshit
I just tell it like it is
We got a f*cked up situation that we can't dismiss
We've been running from our problems
And now it's time to catch our breath
Before we run ourselves to death
Listen up, all you carnivores
'Cause you'll run ourselves to death
You'll run ourselves to death
