Afro-fusion musician BNXN rose to prominence in his hometown of Lagos, Nigeria, after building a buzz with his smooth vocal style and major collaborations with Burna Boy and Pheelz.
His first solo project, the 2021 EP Sorry I'm Late, was followed the next year by Bad Since '97. Led by the Kizz Daniel- and Seyi Vibez-assisted hit "Gwagwalada," BNXN released his debut album, Sincerely, Benson, in October 2023.
Leaving university to produce music full-time, the young vocalist settled on the name Buju, a reference to his roots ("Buju” means breadfruit and is a nickname given to children), which he created an acronym for: Beauty Underneath Just Understood.
In early 2020, the vocalist received a career-defining co-sign from Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, who reached out to collaborate after hearing Buju's "L'Enu.” The duo's remix of the track, released on new label Spaceship Records, soon garnered over a million streams.
Rebranding as BNXN (pronounced "Benson”) in 2022, the singer had his biggest hit to date on Pheelz' viral track "Finesse,” before collaborating with U.K. rappers JAE5 ("Propeller”), B Young ("Ocean”), and M Huncho ("Pray 2 the East”). His second EP, Bad Since '97, arrived later that year, showing a stronger Afrobeats influence and boasting a feature from Wizkid.
