Brad Proudlove - Our Lady of the Fields Lyrics

November 1999, cleaning out cars all night deep in the potash mine
John says he heard about a guy, some easy money, get the salt out of our eyes

Well John I'll try
Anything twice
Leave this hole behind

John said we'd meet up in the dark, the caretaker lives alone out in the RV park
He's got some money in a box, underneath the bed, he's heard, like 30 thousand bucks
Just wave the rifle in the air, we'll wear our balaclavas, just give him a scare

One friday night
Bundled up tight
We'll do it right

We snuck up and John kicked in the door, startled the old man for a second, maybe more
He produced a loaded 45, colt single action that was sleeping by his side

And then a blur
I swear I heard
2 shots for sure

God bless Our Lady of the Fields, god bless the summer rains to boost the harvest yields
And god bless the man we robbed that night, and that heavy single action pistol by his side
We dug a hole deep in the earth, a few measly dollars was all that old man's life was worth

And then we ran
Alberta bound
Haunted by that sound

We parted ways on down the road, the law caught up with John in Maple Creek, I'm told
As for his partner, no one knows. Twenty years later living some new life they s'pose
But I'm just back here underground, twenty years of guilt weigh down the wrinkles on my brow

Another man's life
Kids and a wife
Never felt quite right
