Grandpa Grove was in the Navy, fought in World War 2
Dad jumped out of airplanes with the Army's eighty-two
A pair of uncles went to 'Nam, wounded in and out
Now there's one who sent his son to fight without a doubt
Think of all the families who sent their boys and girls
To sweat & work & shed their blood, all around the world
We all just did our duties, what we thought was right
Sacrificing safety, so you can sleep at night
Why do we serve
Why do we serve
We serve for freedom; project our Nation's rights
We serve for education; learning all we might
We serve because it's family; Tradition and much more
We serve to go and see the World, outside the chopper door
Why do we serve
Joined just past high school, after a year of laying low
Ask my recruiter anything... he didn't know
Bootcamp then to Corps School, saw my first patient die
Then Labor and Delivery, was the apple of nurses' eye
A second trip to bootcamp, they made my head a jar
Off to Okinawa, in the field, or in the bar
A Stormy Desert blew my mind; Did my Flesh no good
Blink of eye there went twenty- five, still standing where I stood
