Mountain Laurel
2024 David D. Holloway ASCAP
Down from the hills came this girl
In an Appalachian mountain's early Spring
Hard work was all I had shovelin' coal
Her papa owned the coal mines where I slaved
To him I was a no-good Romeo
His daughter a blossomed mountain dream
He'd swear, "You're only good for diggin' coal."
She'd wish upon a star but I would pray
Mountain Laurel my flower in the wind
We'll have tomorrow
I'll be with you again
Her ol' man warned me, "Stay away from her."
"Or it won't be coal dust take your final breath."
But I'd fell for Laurel's mountain aire
My passionflower just might be my death
On my last day of misery in those mines
Her ol' man heard our plan to run away
Leaving feuds and family far behind
To Moonbow River's honeymoon in May
Mountain Laurel, my flower in the wind
We'll have tomorrow
I'll be with you again
Well that coal mine fell on me! Her old man had me trapped!
Thank God I got free but she thought I was dead
She swallowed Laurel poison, from her blossoms and her leaves
Spoonwood Mountain still remembers, but all the mountain grieves
Mountain Laurel, my flower in the wind
We'll have tomorrow
I'll be with you again...
