David LaLone - Finding Jesus Story Lyrics

David LaLone - Finding Jesus Story Lyrics

Four walls
Folded hands
Leather bound
Letters red
Those were Jesus' words
That I found bold and true
Sometimes confusing
But not as confusing as this zoo
This zoo we call home
Societies suckling comb

While my childhood peers searched for Waldo and Carmen Sandiego
I looked for Jesus
Leaving church wondering, where did he go?

I grew up in a tiny church
Where I met Jesus in a book
He jumped right off the page
Talked to me like an imaginary friend
Whispered words in my ear
I sprayed them on walls
Preaching what I was taught
But I got caught
In those four walls
My identity formed
By the warmth of the pew
And the love of the church
I saw figments in pale pigments on the wall
Flannelgraph sunday school lessons
Always left me wanting more
But worship must end at noon
Time to read the Sunday newspaper cartoons

In my own family I felt like a clown
Unable to wipe off my painted face
They only saw the expression
Written in ink
They never thought to ask what I think
I always sought to dig deeper than small talk
I had questions
No one had answers
I had Jesus
But I didn't like his answers
My family switched churches
Where I met a girl who now is my wife
Found my place in a youth group
Where we discussed the bible in depth
I was mentored by a pastor
Who opened my eyes to a world
He called it the Kingdom of God
Jesus' words spoken from a friend
We did life together
Outside the four walls
Outside the pages bound in leather
My life was experiencing better weather

I saw Jesus in the streets
In a hobo asking for change
I said "I got 3 quarters of what you're looking for"
And like an angel he disappeared

In high school, I got baptised
Filled with this Holy Spirit
That I had only read about
But, now I was living it out
I was beginning to be transformed
Mind, body and soul
This prepared me for school
Off to college
I answered the call to ministry
Bible college dorm, I was breaking from the norm
My peers were seeking Jesus too
Idealist youth we thought we were so cool
Emergent theology
Second coming of the First Century church
Highlighter markings all over the book of Acts

Upon graduating, I was soon planting a church
Where we sat in a circle
Trying to see Jesus in each other
Letting the Spirit move in the weirdest of ways
But those were the best of the Anchor days
This church quickly collapsed
Into depression, I relapsed
Labelled myself a failure
The next church I stepped in collapsed within months
Just another reminder from Satan
That I was not equipped
Not equipped to speak
Not equipped to lead
Not equipped to be me

I was a
Homeless ragamuffin
Without a church
No walls to cling to
I soon felt the spirit waning
I was lost
And needed Jesus to find me
He sent messenger after messenger
Angel after angel
Words turned to bread
Water into wine
Hugs were shock paddles for my heart
Without walking into a sanctuary
The church surrounded me

I walked through the valley and Jesus
Was with me
He led me into these doors
To sit in discomfort
To be transformed again
To learn what I did not know
To see him anew
To Find Jesus
By rubbing elbows with his kids
