Footwear supporting the lowest of life
Will carry me on the coldest of nights
In wandering I follow the lights
Only a half hour 'til I arrive
Trespass and knock or freeze to death alone
I'm greeted by the most heavenly host
Who offers to take and hang my coat
Invites me to make myself at home
Never have I been more thankful than I am now
Never could find the thing that I can't live without
I've exhausted every footstep from these shoes
Though I've lost so much I've still so much to lose
This generous hospitality
Welcoming smile and voice confront my grief
Eyes water and my nose begins to leak
Wonder how someone could welcome me
I've gained more than I've lost
I will lose nothing that I cannot gain again
I've gained more than I've lost
But the only treasure I could lose is you, my friend
