Today is a triumph for freedom, as huge as any victory that's ever been won on any battlefield
Yet to seize the meaning of this day, we must recall darker times
Yeah, they tell me if I don't vote, it's a sacrifice forsaken
A freedom that ain't make it, an opportunity wasted
People came before me, fought and died so I can do it
Now I got the chance, how could I not take it
But I'm stressed, my God, and I cannot shake it
Cause I have my thoughts and I cannot place them in a ballot box
I feel like every dot will be the wrong choice because of it
The gun my man's got to protect, the same one they shot my cousin with
That ain't the brunt of it, they say if I vote Democrat, I vote against the Covenant
I disregard my people if I dare to vote Republican
Why does my vote matter more to them than blood I'm covered in
For the record, I don't know what my stance is
We got a divide so big that I don't know how to stand in
How do you pick a side when you just don't understand it
When you don't know the struggle and your mind needs expanding
Like, what about that mother who died because the doctor ain't operate
He ain't wanna do time, and the baby inside of her wasn't even alive
So we lost the life of a woman who just ain't need to die
What about that kid who ain't get to live
Because her daddy convinced her momma they couldn't do it
And now instead of being 16 and following dreams, her parents never even got to hear her first scream
I mean, it ain't as simple as it seems, or maybe it is
I have a tendency to overthink
Cause I think about the good that every vote can bring
And then I think the evils that they ignore just seem so extreme
And ain't a candidate that represents me, there's just one that looks like me
But they both seem empty, and the pandering don't work on me
The methods don't tempt me, so when that election come, I pray my brothers forgive me
Oh beautiful
For spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
They did not arrive in brave ships in search of a home for freedom
They did not mingle fear and joy in expectation that in this new world
Anything would be possible to a man strong enough to reach for it
They came in darkness, and they came in chains
And today, we strike away the last major shackle of those fierce and ancient bonds
