When I was only two weeks old they took me to the beach
To the house of my Uncle Jack and Aunt T Gross
They were different somehow from the rest of our family
Two neo-intellectuals and forward-thinking folks
Uncle Jack ate his Grape-Nuts with orange juice on top
Raised bees and read heavy books on philosophy and chess
Aunt T was a political activist and lobbied for ERA
And had the first computer I ever saw in the mess upon her desk
You can hear the snow that's falling on the barn so dim and still
Bandy and Bear are barking at the goats out in the field
And I know that I'll be welcome when I knock upon the door
Of the old Pokeberry farmhouse like I've always done before
When I was out of high school I was really down on myself
Because I didn't have enough money for school
And T and Jack both have advanced degrees and are really super-smart
So as I explained my situation I felt like a total fool
But they said education is an ongoing process
And hopefully you're learning every day until the day you're dead
And you know it took your cousin eight years to finish undergrad
And I drove home mulling over what they said
When I was still in college I went to the farm one night
And I sat upon the porch with Uncle Jack
We talked about religion and he explained how God
Was the spirit of humanity from rock to tree and back
Pretty deep words for a baptist, I thought
As I watched Aunt T and my friends talking on the swing
And the sun was sinking in the pond and Jack and I were quiet
As I just tried to take in everything
You can hear the snow that's falling on the barn so dim and still
Bandy and Bear are barking at the goats out in the field
And I know that I'll be welcome when I knock upon the door
Of the old Pokeberry farmhouse like I've always done before
Of the old Pokeberry farmhouse just like I did before
