Driving away the last time
Chaos on my mind
Remembering our fingers intertwined
My parents pulled me into line
And I cried the whole flight
Went to Florida for spring break
Buried my sister in sand on the beach
With a mermaid tail and seashells at her feet
We jumped the waves in the sea
And I could talk to you about most anything
Compassion far beyond your years
And at the bedside in the hospital
Sweater soaking up my tears
Why'd you have to leave me?
It seems so unfair
Playing tag in the gym
A smile, laughing, and running
Your feet turned black and blue
So my dad had to carry you
But you never complained
I remember the first day we met
Putting plays on in the basement
Thought that we were brilliant
Fighting over the cast list
Something about a restaurant
We were best friends from the start
And I could talk to you about most anything
Compassion far beyond your years
And at the bedside in the hospital
Sweater soaking up my tears
Why'd you have to leave me?
And I'm tired of filling emptiness
With the pictures on my phone
They won't make up for the time you'll miss
Or the feeling of being alone
I'll never hear you laugh
A letter's all that's left
In your big cursive handwriting
And I could talk to you about most anything
Compassion far beyond your years
And at the bedside in the hospital
Sweater soaking up my tears
Why'd you have to leave me?
Still see you everywhere in little memories
It's so bittersweet
