The Evan Williams Project - TWO FOR THREE Lyrics
Official

(Aaaahhhh...)
For whom do the twenty-one cannons fire?
They fire for you
Death row
Young men damned to Hell
Heads roll
I see you looking like a poor old dog
Who's about to be euthanized
Well you're in luck, here's a fighting chance
To be eternally recognized
You can't even afford to live
But you can afford to die
Just sign here, on the dotted line
And kiss your troubled life goodbye
But for whom do the twenty-one cannons fire?
Father, for whom do the twenty-one cannons fire?
They fire for you
Your life is
Forfeit
Go
[I was a gunner in those days]
[Some time in December, before Ortona,
Our guns were firing a barrage;
It was a little after 5 in the morning
I was under a tarp with three others,
Since it was misting]
[And from where I was I could hear:
"Why isn't number one gun firing?
Why isn't it firing?"
And I could see they were having trouble
The gun wasn't loading, and I thought -
"I'll go and help them."]
[And I heard a voice that said:
"Don't go."]
[It didn't sound like anyone in my unit.
And it said again:
"Don't go."]
[And I didn't]
[Not a minute later a shell -
A German shell -
Hit their ammunition pile
And blew those four guys into oblivion]
[When I came home I spoke to the pastor about it
And he said:
"God spoke to you."
A few others, a few friends of mine,
Said the same thing]
[And I thought...
Why me?]
[Why'd he speak to me,
And not to them?]
[It came as a surprise for me,
Just how many of us we lost
Before we liberated that town]
[On the best of days
We'd be trading two for three;
Two of our men for three of theirs.]
[Those aren't great numbers.
But we still won out in the end.]
[We still had our victory.]
We got demons out there
Prowling at our door
Dead eyes
Go forth and die
Two four three
Gone
