Pushed my 92 Chevy to the limit this time
Broke down at the Marvin County line
They towed me to town past the company store
Didn't have to look around cause I been here before
She'd sneak out the house with her daddy's rye
To meet a blue collar kid who knew how to lie
Swimming for the moon as it crossed the lake
She never had a dare I wasn't willing to take
Carved a ring from a hickory knot
Tied it in her hair so we wouldn't get caught
She'd whisper a wish to every train going by
Then sing you a hymn and the angels would cry
Crawling through those back streets again
Wading through what might have been
Church bells lofting up from the glen
And I hear her singing
Feet dragging from a sleepless night
Eyes burning in the morning light
Looking past the ghosts that haunt this place
Still doing time for stealing Grace
Streets a little more empty than they were before
Bars on the window of the hardware store
Saw Frankie clock out at the five and dime
His eyes lit up but I just walked on by
Through the sidewalks flooded with doubt
Stepped up on the porch that the neighbor pointed out
Looking through the glass at the bottles on the floor
While my hand refused to knock on the door
Crawling through those back streets again
Wading through what might have been
Church bells lofting up from the glen
And I hear her singing
Feet dragging from a sleepless night
Eyes burning in the morning light
Looking past the ghosts that haunt this place
Still doing time for stealing Grace
The cops caught us sleeping on the bridge one night
Locked us in the tank cause we put up a fight
That night I dreamed I could fly like a bird
Her daddy picked us up but he didn't say a word
Close my eyes and I see her face
How do memories so thick leave an empty space
Wave at the smoke but I just can't see
Did I do it for her or did I do it for me
Crawling through those back streets again
Wading through what might have been
Church bells lofting up from the glen
And I hear her singing
Feet dragging from a sleepless night
Eyes burning in the morning light
Looking past the ghosts that haunt this place
Still doing time for stealing Grace
Card maxed out and I'm back on the road
The farther I get the lesser the load
Drove out of town past the company store
Didn't bother looking back cause I been here before
