In the field stood a pumpkin, still and alone
While the others were carved and their faces were shown
They welcomed the night, flames dancing inside
But this one pumpkin could only hide
Not me, he whispered, I won't be scarred
I'd rather stay whole than to be carved
Each time the blade came close to his skin
He rolled away, afraid to begin
The others said, You have to choose
Become the light or you'll surely lose
It's either you shine or you disappear
Face the darkness, confront your fear
Day by day, the time drew near
Yet he clung to his doubt, held fast to his fear
I don't want a face, I want to stay whole
But deep in his heart, there was a toll
A ghost appeared on the eve of the night
With hollowed eyes and a warning bright
Time's running out, the end's close by
Be a beacon, or soon you'll die
The others said, You have to choose
Become the light or you'll surely lose
It's either you shine or you disappear
Face the darkness, confront your fear
But still, he trembled, too scared to be seen
Fearing the cut, though the blade was clean
And when the harvest came, he met his fate
No candle for him, only an empty plate
He wasn't carved; no fire inside
Instead, he was baked, and his spirit died
Spiced and sweet, he was served as pie
While the others lit up the October sky
The ones who had faced what they once feared
Burned bright through the night, year after year
But the pumpkin who hid was nowhere to be
A lesson of what fear can decree
The others said, You have to choose
Become the light or you'll surely lose
It's either you shine or you disappear
Face the darkness, confront your fear
So, when life cuts deep, don't turn away
It's in the carving we find our way
For only by facing what we deny
Do we light up the night or fade like pie
