The first deception was the notion that the world would open up
That the boredom would give way unto an overflowing cup
That the people I met inside the walls of higher ed
Would paint a gilded world of meaning on the inside of my head
But oh, these are just songs we sing
Like fairy tales, Homer, and children with wings
The next deception was the one that told us we could have it all
That we could be the shining beauty at the centre of the ball
That we would grow to fill the shoes that move us to our fate
And plant us firmly at the doors of heaven's pearly gate
But oh, these are just songs we sing
Like fairy tales, Homer, and children with wings
The best we can do is to live with the loss
And hope that we don't buckle under the cross
And in the wings of all our acts the last dark deceptions lurk
The thousand eyes that realized this was never meant to work
