A parked Mardi Gras float by a muddy four wheeler
'Fore crossing that shimmerin Mississippi river
I might be coming down with a fever
I listen to papa sing in the church choir
And l want to see all of your baby pictures
All blindingly blonde, curious and clever
At least that's how I know you now
As I order my all-star breakfast over medium
I wonder if you've ever been to a waffle house
I get my hash browns scattered, smothered, and covered
I send you a picture of their open kitchen fridge
You reply "wtf that's a lotta eggs"
And when I get annoyed on my way to new orleans
I reframe the things that I see thru your eyes
And it makes me more grateful to be a real person
In a car over a swamp by an oil refinery
And I want to know you through and through
What you've left behind what you carry with you
And I drive on 'cross that basin bridge
You say "it's so easy" altho others beg to differ
I facetime you in to my walk round the neighborhood
You see the southern night sky thru my shitty phone camera,
And despite pixelated fidelity you ask
"How does anyone bare it" all the beauty
I think to myself, I could ask you the same thing
I could tell you anything
But sometimes I just bite my tongue
