Jim Staley - Men of 1916 Lyrics

Jim Staley - Men of 1916 Lyrics

100 years ago they fought for freedom. From centuries under the English hand
The Men of 1916 lit the flame... Of the fire that became free Ireland
Their fathers and forefathers rose against them, Rising after rising was put down
They never thought they'd ever free old Ireland... From the tyranny of the British Crown
James Connely, Thomas Clarke and Joesph Plunkett
MacDiarmada, MacDonagh and Eamonn Ceannt
On the steps of the G.P.O. stood Patrick Pearse, The Irish proclamation being sent

100 years ago they fought for freedom. From centuries under the English hand
The Men of 1916 lit the flame... Of the fire that became free Ireland

For a week they bravely held the British Army. Outnumbered they were finally surpressed
The British marched them through the streets of Dublin. The Irish people did not seem impressed
Rising Leaders were quickly executed, which increased the people's sympathies
It only fueled the fire of rebellion, and the British committed new atrocities
