It was in December 1920
I still do recall that fateful night
I went to my home in Cork City
I still do recall that dreadful sight
The fire was started in a drapery
On Patrick's Street by the Black and Tans
Who came here to send a blunt message
To people who dared to make a stand
Oh tonight we wage war on empire
As our city smoulders by the Lee
We'll follow the Tans into the mire
And fight until our nation's free
The flames in the night spread so quickly
As the Tans fired shots on Grand Parade
It was in reprisal for an ambush
By the bold Cork No. 1 Brigade
But worse was to come on the Northside
In savagery I barely understood
When the gallant brothers Delaney
Were murdered in their farmhouse in cold blood
Oh tonight we wage war on empire
As our city smoulders by the Lee
We'll follow the Tans into the mire
And fight until our nation's free
