So here I am now, a former summoner's apprentice
I've dishonored my kind just by giving in
I've upset the set of people who took pride
In me being something they could never be
And so, you see
I decided to step out of that lifestyle
And recover my smile, eager to find something worthwhile
It took a while, but I finally found it
By the shores of the river Nile
Although I heard of necromancy years ago
It never caught my eye, probably 'cos it was
Frowned upon by the status quo
And I didn't even know you could look beyond
But soon I started to read about its possibilities
Its pros and cons, the required abilities
To practice this doctrine
And though I knew it would be costly
Mostly, I was sold
So I became a necromancer
Abandoned fame and wealth
For just a humble chance to find my path
To make my way through death and decay
Redrawing the lines between life and death
And crossing them both ways
A necromancer
Living in a place that isn't a place but an idea
A mental haven among crows and ravens
And death and corpses
A garden without grass...
After the revelation I just couldn't go on
It took me time but then I realized
I was not meant to be a part of that elite
Making creatures appear at will at my feet
No! That wasn't for me...
I was oblivious to the hidden meaning of all this
The tease, the breeze, disguised as magic expertise
The dominance, commanding other beings
Brought to me, by me, to work for me
But it was hard to believe, and harder to swallow
Why nobody brought up the creature's perspective
In this inventive ritual reflective
Of every cruelty committed
Long before the times of Shakespeare?
'Cos nobody stops to think
If their acts are right or wrong
From other sides of the spectrum
Treat philosophy as tales for kids
Antiquated, obsolete
Without taking seven minutes
To grasp what the story's really about
And applying it to current times
No!
But everybody vents and rants
And cries when their world is questioned
Or their views are threatened
Become defensive instead of pensive
And retaliate to an inexistent attack
Never holding back
Acting as a pack and not an individual
With their own thoughts and opinions
As one would hope so
But even more so
Begin to chant a war song
To hail their bros and beat the foes they created
By projecting their fears
Onto the people they dictated different
So I no longer am a summoner's apprentice
I had to give up summoning ASAP
To become what I could be
And nobody could see
Selective blindness coated with false kindness
When they offer their so called wisdom to the apprentice
'Cos in the minds of others you gotta be
Equivalent to a doctor or a lawyer or a dentist
And deny your agency for them to relish
Your ma and pa, even your nanna
Bringing a waterfall
Of unexpected pressure your way
But death and decay
Were calling your name
And gone are the days
When you listened and tried to explain
When your words were received with disdain
And the only sane thing to attain
Is the patience and strength
To refrain from this pain
"One more time, try it now!"
And again and again and again...
So I became a necromancer
Abandoned fame and wealth
For just a humble chance to find my path
To make my way through death and decay
Redrawing the lines between life and death
And crossing them both ways
A necromancer
Living in a place that isn't a place but an idea
A mental haven among crows and ravens
And death and corpses
A garden without grass...
Full of worms and dirt, where lifelines revert
Intangible paradise, vastly underpriced
Surrounded by gravestones wherever you go
But still unfathomable to the zeitgeist
What's to say
Death's not looking the other way
While we live among
These creatures with hollow bones?
Black cats, rats, bats
Dark arts, cold face
True calling, clean slate
New home, safe space
They don't know what's like to be a necromancer
They shout and rage about you being lower class
Disgraced them, they can't understand you
Made yourself as low as a pole dancer
(There would be nothing wrong with that)
But their views, archaic and not unlike their holy books
The source of belief systems made to make them
Pierce you with that looks
For not being at the top
The cream of the crop
If you refuse to be a surgeon or a cook
Making you both the cop and the crook
Disobeying a code they follow that even its writer disavows
But they bow to the text ignoring the subtext
And provoke distress
If you challenge their idea of success
Living your life through somebody else
Expecting them to thrive
Forcing your failures upon them
And giving them a hard time
For not realizing it was your fault
That they weren't aware of the crushing cold
One can be in when misplaced
As you once were
But now... it's too late to project
So you regret all the times you convinced us we had to sweat
Every time you decreed we'd have to wait to be old
To just know you were right, know it all, it was fate
I'll leave you there while Xel prepares
Gruesome affairs, unanswered prayers
The ones who cared will become heirs
It's fair and square I won the dare
Now go elsewhere... the rite begins!
Succubus Igitur Barada Hex
Dalamudis Versus Eldritch Summum
Abaddon Behemoth Semper Asatru
Saturnae Mortem Grimoire Burr
So I became a necromancer
Abandoned fame and wealth
For just a humble chance to find my path
To make my way through death and decay
Redrawing the lines between life and death
And crossing them both ways
A necromancer
Living in a place that isn't a place but an idea
A mental haven among crows and ravens
And death and corpses
Where you can find more necromancers
Who abandoned fame and wealth
For just a humble chance to find their path
To make their way through death and decay
Redrawing the lines between life and death
And crossing them both ways
We're necromancers
Surrounded by worms and dirt
Lifelines revert
Our paradise, your hell
Gravestones wherever you go
Unfathomable to anyone who's not
A necromancer
