The cross was a symbol-of torture, shame and pain
And on a cross such as this-my Saviour was slain
But His blood changed that cross- to a sign of victory
Now this symbol of torture-means hope for you and me
On that symbol of defeat-He won our victory
On that cross of the lost-He set all sinners free
In the tomb of the dead-gained life eternity
The symbol of fear and dread-now means comfort to me
The cross once meant evil-where wicket men would die
Would strike fear into man's heart-as they would walk by
Now it means salvation-with victory over sin
A lighthouse for all sinners-to guide and lead us in
