While waiting on the green light outside of school
I saw one little boy take a fall
He looked like he was cryin' but he picked himself up
And he said that didn't hurt at all
And I thought as I watched him wipe his eyes
People are all the same
We put on a face, we put on a smile
So we can take part in the game
How often we say everything's fine
But the smile never reaches our eyes
Listening to words come from our lips
Knowing that we're telling a lie
We're keeping the truth somewhere deep in our heart
Careful of impressions we leave
We put on a face so that no-one can say
We're wearing our heart on our sleeve
And how many times when we've been hurt
We can't let anyone know
Each new experience leavin' its mark
But we don't let it show
From the day that we fall on our way to school
The first day our world comes apart
We put on a face, put on a smile
To hide what's goin' on in our heart
Could this be the reason we search for someone
Who knows exactly what we mean
Someone who knows all our hurts and our fears
And loves us just for where we've been
And even the times we're not talking at all
They know just what we're thinking of
We don't feel the need to hide behind faces
When we're with the ones that we love
But how many times when we have been hurt
We can't let anyone know
Each new experience leavin' its mark
But we don't let it show
From the day that we fall on our way to school
The first day our world comes apart
We put on a face, we put on a smile
As long as we're looking the part
Oh and hide what's going on in our heart
