WHEN BELLA SINGS MARLENE

Very few Congress people can sing like Marlene Dietrich.
They say not one in fifty can even carry a tune.
But I know a Congresswoman, born the year I got the vote,
Who sang with a nightingale in every note,

I hadn't quite got the picture, 'til one night after a do,
We sat at the old piano, when the speeches were through.
And the keynote came from the rally, down to Blanche's settee,
And sang a song like a siren from the screen.

So I said to myself: Wha' hey?
Politics is more than they say.

Chorus
When Bella Sings Marlene, stars stop in the sky.
Planets stand in their orbits 'til the song goes by.
On the second refrain of the ""moths to the flame,"" spirits fill the room.
When Bella Sings Marlene, all the roses bloom.
When Bella sings, all the roses bloom.

Next time the legend's tellin',
And you hear how she moved the world,
And they say how the Vatican quaked at her name
And there's truth in every word,
Remember she sang the love songs
With the long and the short and the tall.
Remember she sang the love songs best of all.

And they say where the night meets the day
You can still get a great serenade:

Final chorus
When Bella Sings Marlene, stars stop in the sky.
Planets stand in their orbits 'til the song goes by.
On the second refrain of ""moths to the flame,"" spirits join the tune.
When Bella Sings Marlene, all the roses bloom.
When Bella sings, all the roses bloom.
