Well a figure appears before you
And you're not quite sure what it is
But you think it might be someone you left far behind
You're looking pretty good he says
But wait till you see how I am
And he pulls out a pocketwatch and tells you the time
Well it's 1943
And you're right in the thick of it
Someone grabs your arm
You better run or join the other side
And you say I couldn't find the line
So you're standing in the crosshairs
And you're feeling kinda slow
And the man with the gun says I'm gonna let you go
Why you cry I ain't got no business being here
And he reaches down and pulls out a note
It says the war is over in fact it never begun
So you got five minutes to get outta here before this whole damn place is overrun
You pick up your things and start heading down the dirt road
Then you remember you're not really one for walking in the mud
So you sit yourself down and pull out a picture of a girl you know
And you wonder if she's happy but she sure don't look it
As the fireworks start you pour out the last of your tea
Saying this kinda thing ain't welcome where I'm going
When the bus arrives you're standing there on your knees
You haven't eaten in days but you know it's better if you don't
The driver says I'm sorry sir we don't accept your height of people here
And you say please Mr Driver I need a place to sleep
He says you can take Jimmy's spot he's getting off in about an hour
And you say thank you sir but I'll just sit in the back with the gun for hire
Now the gun for hire he was quiet he didn't like to take up space
And yet he slips you a knife and says leave me or your life
Now when the wheel hit the mine there was little that anyone said
Except the driver, you can get off here if you're dead!
Now it's around this time you start thinking that you know this figure rather well
And you're looking and you're thinking and you say well now isn't that Lee the General
The figure just laughs and starts to fade away
Leaving nothing but the chain of his watch and you put it around your neck
You're thinking about that girl and wondering if there's a time she could really be happy
But she's stuck in that photo and you're stuck in 1943
And you say baby I know you're trying but I just don't think it'll work out this time around
But when you leave here come and find me I know a place we can settle down
Oh we can settle down woah woah
