We unearth the oldest bottle only to discover
We waited too long and the cork has turned to clay
Natasha Rao
I was a terrible idea
My mother had me at 25
A direct result of cheating
In one hand she had me
In the other gasoline
She poured all over our lives
She didn't have the capacity
To do the dishes in her sink
Let alone raise a child
At 16 I ran away for the first time
To my narcissistic biological father
Who at least paid the bills on time
At 18 I left them all for good
With no proof there was anything better out there
Did you know the IRS considers playwriting a hobby?
I learned this in my first college-level theatre class
And continued to get a degree in theatre anyway
Two years after I graduated
I bought a one-way ticket
To a city I had never been to
In the middle of a global pandemic
With no job lined up
Said city had 44000 cases of a sickness
That attacks your lungs
I have asthma
I have a deep desire for a savings account
And I write poetry
My friend If you find the bottle
Don't wait
Drink
