She never could kick addiction
I knew her 20 years
Worked and cried and sweat and dyed our prom hair
Almost dead a dozen times
We were stupid and young
I grew up had to take care
She couldn't seem to come
Every choice she made was wrong and then
All the good ones gone
The only thing she did right
Was a perfect little boy
She used him like a pawn to get what
She couldn't work for
Was a whirlwind of what can never be
Right before our eyes was
The best that we could see
She got busted with a truckload she's the only one they found
Two consecutive life sentences handed down
By the time that she was booked I had James in Baton Rouge
Headed for New England nothing left to lose
No one asked us questions everyone a helping hand
I pretended fire took our ID's all we had
We started a new life as a son and mom and we
Made a better family
He meant the world to me
It took a couple years he don't remember her at all
Never left an address didn't ever call
Last summer I drove back with my fake ID
Showed her a picture of him and me
I left there with a prayer word of thanks of what went on
That she was still in prison he was safe at home
And I never did once look back
It's been a crooked path
But it brought us back
To the work and tears and sweat brush his hair for school
Teaching how to pray and the golden rule
Wishing for the best in everything we do
Knowing what goes on we'll always get through
Was a whirlwind of what is and what should be
Right before our eyes was
The best that we could see
