The Cavemen gathered 'round campfires
In awe of the spirit of the flame
And it warmed the souls of Neanderthals
Who gave it a name and roasted their game

And the Greeks they worshiped Hephaestus
With elements of land, water and wind
And the Romans sought to subdue the world
As they paid homage to the God Vulcan

But what did they see in the conflagration
As their eyes met across the pyre
The measured march of knowledge
The eternal light of mankind

Or was it sparks of common sympathy
That passed in sight of their gaze
Or a lonely lamentation of penitence
Or the fiery passion of heat all ablaze

In modern times, we like our ancestors
Are yet intrigued and drawn to the glow
Scouts, cowboys and soldiers
Still marvel at the kindling stoked slow

But we have we learned through the ages
Do we think before "consumed" by desires
Or do we still have those ancient instincts
