These shadows learn from all our mistakes
In darkness learning the truth and lying in wait
These splotches of white on a canvas of black
Brighten only themselves and never dare to share that
Can I trace the lines of your tattoos with my fingers and hear your voice
Before you leave, one last time?
Why don't we wait to let go?
Why can't we take our lives slower
When we forget our blood runs from our heads to our toes?
I've hogged all these photos and put them in books
Then stacked them around me to feel your embrace
I've been drowning for years when the ocean reclaimed what I took
But despite all these years, I'm feeling hollow still
And this recurring nightmare lets me say your name
Can I see the lines in the ground from where you walked before me
And said to grow up better than you
Why don't we wait to let go?
Why can't we take our lives slower
When we forget our blood runs from our heads to our toes?
