I was there, but life ain't always fair
Had to hustle on my feet so my kids could keep a pair
Of fresh sneaks, watch me struggle to make the ends meet
Missed a few meals to make sure that my kids eat
And it was temporary cause we planned for success
See we had to suffer then to flourish now And I guess
That I missed some growing pains
Missed some ball games, 15 hours on a plane
Missed my daughter's first flame
They laugh about the past, all I have are the pictures
When they talk about the future, all I got was the whispers
Can't be mad cause they turned out fine
Sometimes I'm bitter cause I missed out time
Tryna make it up by spoiling my grandson
My kids often say, what has our dad become
But it's not quite the same I feel I still missed out
Did I do what was best
Sometimes I have my doubts
Mama's kids, amazing what she did
She was there every minute, though her patience had a limit
Pushed them to the best, was there at their worst
Put her whole life second cause the kids came first
Lotta years to finish college, made a real sacrifice
On track to be a doctor, see she paid that price
They say, thank you for your service like I did something special
But mama held the family down, I gave her the medal
In the end, it took a team effort
She was holding down the fort, I jumped into the desert
Made the most of the moments, though the time was pressured
We're stronger from the past, and our family is tethered
What they need, I got, what I need, they got
From kayaks to yacht, that's my hand up to God
I take a dagger for my babies, and I give some back
We move together as a team, that's how we stay on track
What's it mean, to really have a dream
That you keep locked away, if it goes unseen
Fear of not being good, fear of being too old
Fear of tarnishing the things that you thought were gold
If you really wanna do it, doesn't matter about the others
When you paint outside the canvas
Doesn't matter about colors
The only one that has to love it is the person that's doing
Try to please too many others, and you wind up ruining
Make the most of your minutes
You can't get back time
Make the change while you're in it
Whether dollars or dime
Let it go if it hurts too bad
It can't grow in bad turf like that
When the time comes, to take your last breath
You need to know that you have no regret
Let the warmth fill you up for a while
Then close your eyes, just kick back and smile
Smile, yeah
Kick back and smile
Smile baby, yeah
Kick back and smile
