I am a child of the 50s, I spent my boyhood days with Elvis as the king
Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Sam and Dave, Fabian and Jerry Lee
Then we were teenagers, and thought that we were grown
We cruised into the 60s with the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Janis and the Stones
We partied at Woodstock, we watched our friends killed in Vietnam
We swore upon their graves that we'd never fight a war like that again
Free love and kindness we'd spread across the sea
We were so damn optimistic that we could set the whole world free
All we wanted to was peace, but all we got was war
We were all about love, and not fighting anymore
We were gonna get naked, we were gonna high
And never come down, and not even try
What the hell happened? Where did it go?
Can you please tell me...I just gotta know
We were all together, in harmony
Now the world's gone crazy, everybody but me
Then came the 80's and suddenly the boomers were in charge
We bought houses and cars had some kids and charged it all on credit cards
But the same guy who toked with me for peace in 69
Became a right-wing yuppie who thought that smoking pot should be a crime
All we wanted to was peace, but all we got was war
We were all about love, and not fighting anymore
We were gonna get naked, we were gonna high
And never come down, and not even try
What the hell happened? Where did it go?
Can you please tell me...I just gotta know
We were all together, In harmony
Now the world's gone crazy, everybody but me
We spoke truth to power to try and get our air and water clean
We had our own clear vision of what we wanted for our American dream
I think it all changed on the night John Lennon died
I'm not sure how it happened but I damn sure don't think it's right
All we wanted to was peace, but all we got was war
We were all about love, and not fighting anymore
We were gonna get naked, we were gonna high
And never come down, and not even try
