Two Times Twice - Ground Up (Live) Lyrics

This is not how she thought her life would turn out to be
As a single mother with three mouths to feed
Always counting pennies, making only ends meet
And if she lost her job, she'd be out on the street

And her boss knows how much how she needs this job
Out of bad options its the best she's got
So he knows he can treat her exactly how he wants
Always using the threat of giving her the chop
He abuses his power, exploits the situtation
Knowing that she'll tolerate the humiliation
The breathing down her neck, the constant advances
The comments, the touching the staring the glances

But, what can she do? She just doesn't know yet
There's no HR, no proper complaints process
She can't afford to make a black dress protest
The world may be changing but she sees no progress

We don't hear the voices of those who cannot speak
Those who don't have choices doesn't mean that they are weak
If we want to improve things, the direction of this movement
Must be from the ground up, not top down

When she first met her husband he seemed gentle and kind
But, love is blind and she misread the signs
She didn't see this violent, terrible side
Of this dark man, this Jekyll and Hyde

His controlling behaviour it stemmed from his jealousy
Then it led to this violent tendency
Followed by begging and pleading for clemency
The cycle would continue, repeating endlessly

He tried his best to keep her isolated
Cut off from her family and freinds who he hated
Every time she left the house she'd get interrogated
And knocked about if she ever disobeyed him

So when one day he found one day her chatting online
He put her in a coma for a very long time
He smashed up her laptop and smashed up her phone
To make sure she'd forever, forever be alone

We don't hear the voices of those who cannot speak
Those who don't have choices doesn't mean that they are weak
If we want to improve things, the direction of this movement
Must be from the ground up, not top down

Tomorrow morning she'll be taking the stand
And putting herself face to face with the man
Who's carved a massive scar on her life
That will never heal no matter how hard she tries
But as she's grown older, she's grown in strength
She's got daughters now, herself to protect
And if he's still out there, if nothing gets said
Then somebody's daughter somewhere would be next
So she forced herself to go and report him
Worried if her family would believe the story
Worried the police might need to explore it
And she'd have to tell it to a judge and jury
But she's bearing the burden alone on her shoulders
With the courage and strength of ten soldiers
You won't hear of many people much braver
But you'll never see her picture in the paper

We don't hear the voices of those who cannot speak
Those who don't have choices doesn't mean that they are weak
If we want to improve things, the direction of this movement
Must be from the ground up, not top down
