Yellow Shoes
by The Visit the Musical

(Performed by Townspeople)

MATILDE
Anything else, Doctor?
DOCTOR
Let me have some butter! I'm tired of margarine. Oh! And I'll take a bottle of brandy, I have some friends coming over!
MATILDE
Including the shoes that will be fifty-three marks and four pennies?
DOCTOR
Put it on my account!
MATILDE
You don't have an account.
DOCTOR
Well then...I'd like to open one...
Yellow Shoes,
Think of me wearing my yellow shoes.
Got me a pair of those yellow shoes,
Finally feeling...
MATILDE
How do they fit?
DOCTOR
Like a glove! It's amazing what simple things can do for the spirit! But, it's not the fit Mrs. Shell, it's how they make me feel!
Yellow Shoes,
Look at me wearing my yellow shoes,
Got me a pair of those yellows shoes,
Finally feeling secure!
Thank god!
Now that you know that I'm so well shod,
Don't you agree that it's really odd,
Folks you to think I was poor?
MATILDE
Ottilie, you know your father won't let you have those.
OTTILIE
Everyone else is wearing them, why shouldn't I?
POLICE INSPECTOR
I'll take some cuban cigars!
PRIEST
And I'll take six yards of that good french silk!
SCHOOLMASTER
I'll take all your Russian vodka!
MATILDE
How are you paying?
OTTILIE
Like everyone else!
ALL
On credit!
MAYOR
If, and there is no way in heaven or on earth that we would ever agree to Madame Zacazassain's obsured proposal, if,
If there is someway we could agree to her conditions without compromising ourselves.
A vote of moral censure for example. (He sees Anton, the Mayor smiles back) What is it Anton?
ANTON
You're going to kill me aren't you?
MAYOR
Did I say that? Did anyone say that?
MAYOR
We are merely trying to come up with a solution that is acceptable to all the other parties involved!
ANTON
I am the only party involved.
MAYOR
I wish it were that simple. We need a new a new hospital, we need a new school.
ANTON
I want to see your shoes.
TOWNSFOLK
Yellow Shoes.
Look at me wearing my yellow shoes.
ANTON
I have my answer!
TOWNSFOLK
Got me a pair of those yellows shoes,
Finally feeling secure!
MAYOR
It's not what you're thinking! (While the Townsfolk sing, Anton observes from a distance)
TOWNSFOLK
Thank you, God!
Now that you know that I'm so swell shod,
Don't you agree that it's really odd,
Folks used to think I was poor?
People who call themselves the elite,
Are people who take good care of their feet.
So I'm strolling in yellow shoes,
Light as a feather in yellow shoes,
Hellbent for leather,
They keep out the damp,
Say I'm no tramp!
I walk like a champ in yellow shoes!
ANTON
You too, 'Tilde?
MATILDE
Why shouldn't I be pretty like everyone else? Or your children? Have you thought of them?
ANTON
There's a train in just a few minutes.
If I don't stay, I'll no longer be a temptation to the others to do something dreadful,
Something they'll regret for the rest of their lives. Why don't you say something Matilde?
MATILDE
Good bye, Anton.
ANTON
If I get away, she won't pay up, you understand?! When I go the story ends!
TOWNSFOLK
All of the landed gentry you'll see
Will send out an invitation to me,
Come to my party in yellow shoes!
Don't I look smart in my yellow shoes?
State of the art and forever in style,
I'd walk a mile,
Wearing a smile!
Wearing a smile!
Wearing a smile!
Wearing a smile!
In yellow shoes!
ANTON
Let me pass! Let me through! You said you were with me Fredrick?!
SCHOOLMASTER
I am, Anton! But I think the time has come for you to leave before we no longer resist our baiser impulses!
ANTON
Police DeHanke, I insist you make them clear away from me!
POLICE INSPECTOR
Everyone back, make way for Anton Shell to catch his train.
MAYOR
What's keeping you now?
ANTON
She is. She is.
TOWNSFOLK
Yellow shoes.
Look at me wearing my yellow shoes.
Got me a pair of those yellows shoes.
Look at me wearing my yellow shoes
Got me a pair of those yellows shoes.
Look at me wearing my yellow shoes.
Got me a pair of those-
Yellow Shoes!
Yellow Shoes!!
Yellow Shoes!!!
Yellow Shoes!!!!
Yellow Shoes!
Yellow Shoes!
YELLOW SHOES!
YELLOW SHOES!!!!

A Confession
by The Visit the Musical

SCHOOLMASTER
There are untold riches under the land here! Land rich in oil and minerals!
Land mysteriously bought beneath our very feet and just as mysteriously allowed to remain undeveloped.

MAYOR
Buy us back our land that's all we ask. There is oil beneath Pocket Rid Valley, madame!

CLAIRE (Rudely sarcastic)
There's oil beneath the valley?
Well I had never known it!
But I can't buy the valley!
Because
You see
I own it.

ALL
You own it?!

CLAIRE
I own it.

DOCTOR
Then, buy us back Conrad Village Wood!
There is a wealth of minerals just waiting to be mined there, we will be back on our feet in no time!

CLAIRE
Now, when it comes to mind,
I'm a fool, I can't deny it!
But since I already bought it,
There's no way I can buy it.

MAYOR
She's bought that too!

PRIEST
She's bought everything!
SCHOOLMASTER
Then it was YOU who destroyed Bracken!

CLAIRE
As surely as YOU destroyed me!
I own the foundry on Diditoff Square!
And Backmans!
And that church over there
The Tobler Factory too!
Believe me good neighbors, I do!
I told my agents,
Go out and buy everything!
Shut all their coo-coo clocks down!
A little of this,
A whole lot of that!
There's nothing too good for this town!
Now the pain that I felt,
From the hand I was dealt,
Has been finally, nearly, erased!
Your hopes were lunacy!
Your sacrifice, foolish!
Your lives has been a useless waste!

SCHOOLMASTER
Have you no feelings for humanity?!

CLAIRE (Laughing and mocking his remark)
Feelings for humanity?!
Can't you see?
Are for ordinary millionaires,
Not me!
With resources like mine,
I can afford,
A higher justice!
A new world order!
It's perfectly bright!
It's perfectly pure!
It's perfectly clear somehow!
The world has made me into a whore!
Right boys?!

RUIDI & EUNUCHS
The world has made her into a whore!

CLAIRE
You too! You too!

RUIDI & EUNUCHS
The world has made her into a whore!

CLAIRE
Louder! Louder!

ALL
The world has made her into a whore!

CLAIRE
That's better!
I make the world my brothel now!

Love and Love Alone
by The Visit the Musical

(Performed by Chita Rivera (Claire Zachanassian)

When you're young,
Feeling oh so strong
What can prove you wrong?
Love, and love alone.

When the sun,
Seems forever bright
What can dim it's light?
Love, and love alone.

So beware young love, lost in a kiss
There's a truth young love, simple as this:
Every fond hello, ends in goodbye.
What seems certain to live, will die.

So enjoy all the time there is.
If you're here, be here.
Make each day your own.

When tomorrow's come
And your heart is stone
What has made it numb?
Love and love alone.

Love and love alone.

Not found, add it

The Visit is a musical with a book by Terrence McNally, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander.

Based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt's 1956 satirical play about greed and revenge Der Besuch der alten Dame, it focuses on the world's wealthiest woman, Claire Zachanassian, who returns to her financially depressed hometown and offers its residents a new lease on life in exchange for the murder of Anton Schell, the man who abandoned her years ago.
