My daddy and mother, they started me out
'Cross the plains when I was just three
In an old prairie schooner they dragged me about
But it's all meat and drink to me
No chance of reformin' or settlin' down
So long as I've got me a horse
I've been ridin' the range for the last fifty years
Taking these lobos by force
I'm a government hunter - since the survey formed up
The cattlemen pay me my dues
They're tired of the slaughter goin' down every night
I gotta bring 'em some peace they can use
So I pick up my plunder and I get on the trail
These tracks are like newsprint to me
This wolf's a bad hombre - he's crazy for blood
But I'll harbor no grudge, nosiree
Yep, I bite off a plug and have a fresh cup of brew
And I'll check all my traps before noon
I gotta dig the whelps out before they're all grown up
And this'll all be over soon
In God's big, open country - clean water clean air,
It's easy to ride unafraid
I've lived on the ragged edge everywhere
But I can sleep in the bed that I've made
I've made a livin' on bounties but now they're all gone
That one there's the last of it's kind
I've known these old wolves from hell to breakfast beyond
But now I've got big peace of mind
So what will I do now the traps are all sprung
I guess I'll dry up - blow away
Like an old tumbleweed, or the end of a song,
Or the sun at the end of the day
Guess I'll dry up, blow away
Guess I'll dry up, blow away
Guess I'll dry up, blow away
Guess I'll dry up, blow away
