And when I was 10 I was reading fantasy
Mainly because my life was so damn boring
That I wanted to get away from it
And live in a better world
That was more exciting and where things were happening
And when I was 12 I discovered Science Fiction as a separate genre by accident
I had been reading it without recognizing that it was separate because
In the Peter Pan room of the Pasadena Public Library
All the fiction was just smushed together-author's last name
And that was that
When I was 12 I saw a bad movie called Devil Girl From Mars
And um
I got into a competition with it
I said 'Geez, I can write a better story than that'
Anybody can write a better story than that
And by then I had some idea how authors earned a living
And um
I got busy and um
Tried to write a bit better story than that
Now of course I couldn't
But um
It actually turned out to be an ancestor of my first book, Patternmaster
Science Fiction was fun because I discovered
That I enjoyed reading popular science
And I really enjoyed um
Just speculating
Um
We've all heard the idea that um
There are three kinds of science fiction
What If, If Only, and If This Goes On
And I didn't know that at the time
But
Somehow managed to sense it
And had such fun you know
Reading things and then going in my own direction with them
I guess it never occurred to me not to write about them
Because in those days
I was writing mainly for fun
Even though I did start sending things out when I was 13
But I was mainly enjoying myself
And
So I did what I enjoyed
And I think I stayed with Science Fiction because
The freedom that it allowed was just
So great
There was no subject that I couldn't discuss
There was no
There was nothing I couldn't take a look at
